What
New weight loss surgery involves gastric band.

Who

Allergan (Botox) and Johnson & Johnson are both opening clinics to perform percedure across U.S.

Issues
No long term studies, device can shift, patient needs more surgeries for adjustment, do not know if results will last when band is removed.

Major Push For New Surgery Method
Surgery to achieve weight loss has been a little used option for obese Americans until now.  Only 1% of the morbidly obese, defined as 100 pounds or more overweight, have used surgery as a solution.  The reasons are many and include the cost of the surgery which can be as high as $15,000 and is seldom covered by insurance.  The other factor is the danger.  The traditional gastric by-pass comes with a host of complications including death in a few cases.

Corporate Giants Battle For Market Share
Now two corporate giants are getting ready to launch a major advertising campaign to push the latest gastric surgery, the silicone band. The companies, Allerrgan and Johnson & Johnson are planning numerous clinics throughout the U.S. and are training surgeons to perform the procedure.

They are each planning major advertising campaigns which are already airing in Texas and other markets.

What's Involved

The surgery involve a silicone band wraped around the stomach to restrict food intake.  The surgery is not as invasive as by-pass but carries risk including the fact that the band can slip and need regular adjustment, four to six times in the first year.

Small incisions are cut in the abdomen and surgeons use camera assisted placement to aviod large incisions which result in shorter healing.

Website Promotion
Johnson & Johnson has already launched an impressive website that took two years to develop that promotes the surgery and allows visitors to see what they'll look like with the drastic weight loss the surgery promises.  The website is:
http://www.realizemysucess.net
The band device is called Realize.

Does It Work?
Both companies are promoting personal sucess stories but there are no long term studies to see if the device will last and if patients will stick to their new eating patterns if the band is removed.  But for now, companies are gearing up for the next "Botox" windfall.  Hopefully, not at the expense of patient's health and lives.
